Artist's Comments

My entry for *FlannMoriath's Advent Calander Project. It's an invitation-only project for a few dozen digital animal artists, and I was very pleased to be asked to contribute.

I chose to work off the theme of what winter means to me. While some might think of winter in the idea of frolicking in snow and Christmas, for me it is a very solemn season. It's when nature goes to sleep and the animals go dormant. It's a season of stillness, silence, and solitude.

I really tried to capture that crisp, sparkly light that comes off newfallen snow, though I might have gotten a bit carried away with the twinklies. The fox, while a pain in the ass to paint, turned out, I think, pretty good. I'm stille experimenting with ways of drawing fur, and while this method was simple, drawing things hair-by-hair is very boring (and gouged up my tablet too). It was worth it though. Foxes are my favorite canines.

I think the fox represents that indomitable spirit of nature, that is able to survive the harshest moments in the most desolate places. The orange color stands out against the blue like heat against the cold. OR MAYBE I JUST WANTED TO DRAW SOMETHING FLUFFEH.

Wow, you're definately right about drawing the fur hair-by-hair, it was completely worth it. I like how peaceful he looks even underneath all that snow.

Its not that I'm confused, I'm just afraid of what you'll think when you finally understand.

I agree with you about the feeling of Winter. The solitude of it, when you are walking through fresh snow, still falling, its like there's no one in this world but you. Makes it my favorite season.

I love the feeling of this pic. And the sparklies are perfect. xD I love the sparkles in snow. The fox is gorgeous too, curled up against the bite of the cold. The dark rocks hovering over head allow an emphasis on the feeling of solitude and issolation, coupled with the dark forest behind the rocks.

I too see winter as a calm, soothing season, everything silent, quiet. The detal on the fox is amazing, and the background does give off that sence of tranquilizing beauty the snow has.

Absolutely stunning.

I, personally, tend to look at winter in both ways.

Oh this is just gorgeous! i LOVE the twinklies >.< and the fox is beautiful, all snug and safe.

I never thought that snow could look so cozy and inviting! I love the little sparkles in the snow and air, too. The fur texture on the little fox is wonderfully done, and I think it makes a nice contrast to the cold and bare texture of the rock and the fluffiness of the snow. Absolutely gorgeous!

Consider the daffodil. And while you’re doing that, I’ll be over here, looking through your stuff.
